A Trip to Roswell and the Extra-Terrestrial Highway

34
My April 1st post about UFO Sightings in and around Kalispell got me to thinking about our road trip to Roswell, New Mexico and Rachel, Nevada.

Our trip to Roswell was in the fall of 1999 and M and E were still toddlers. We traveled as much as we could at that time, as we were desirous of moving out west. David and I were always keeping an eye out for the last best place.

After a delightful visit to the Chihuahuan Desert of Big Bend, we made our way to New Mexico. New Mexico is simply beautiful and I call it the pastel state because of its muted shades. We visited several places on that trip, but I want to talk about Roswell.

Not only is Roswell the birthplace of Demi Moore, it is also the home of the Roswell UFO Incident - the incident being the crash of an extra-terrestrial spaceship and the recovery of alien bodies. On July 8, 1947 the Roswell Army Air Field office issued a press release stating that personnel from the 509th Bomb Group had recovered a crashed "flying disc" from a ranch near Roswell. The press went into a frenzy. The next day the Air Force rescinded the statement and said that it was not a flying saucer but a radar-balloon.

Today much controversy surrounds the Roswell UFO Incident - did it really occur - was there a cover-up by the military? In turn the city of Roswell, New Mexico easily capitalizes on the UFO phenomenon. Tourists from around the word flock to Roswell to satisfy their curiosity for the unexplained.

This is a picture I took at the Roswell UFO Museum of one of the recovered aliens from the Roswell crash site.

Spooky?!

The museum is filled with alien paraphernalia. Here is where I tortured a bewildered looking M and an angry E with another photograph. Well who wouldn't be - there is a Gray standing right behind them.

M almost 3, E almost 2

We had another one of our close encounters in Rachel, Nevada on the Extra-Terrestrial Highway. Highway 375 is 98 miles long and parallels Area 51- the secretive U.S. military base which is known for conducting all sorts of unusual activities. The Extra-Terrestrial Highway is in a very remote and desolate region of the state. It's an area famous for its UFO sightings; way out in the middle of the dry Great Basin with nothing for miles around except Rachel and The  A'Le'Inn.

Check out the alien looking down at M and E from inside the window.

Earthlings are always welcome and as I recall there weren't too many of us there on December  26, 2000. We looked around the place a bit - at all of the alien souvenirs and such. M and E  played pool with some people from outer-space and even met this nice E.T. family.

M and E look comfortable with these aliens from Outer-Space.

I took a picture of the UFO Landing Zone and it gives you a good idea of what Rachel looks like. Ninety - eight people reside in Rachel with not even so much as a gas station.

So if you visit Rachel, Nevada - and I recommend you do - just because - be sure to get a fill up and have some extra gas before embarking on the Extra-Terrestrial Hwy.

Holiday Rooooad,

Marlene
